Salicylic acid shows up on more acne-product labels than almost any other active ingredient. But most people couldn't explain why it works, or why 0.5% behaves so differently than 2%. Here's what's actually happening when you wash with it.
Why Salicylic Acid (BHA) Is Oil-Soluble, and Why That Matters
Salicylic acid belongs to a small family of exfoliating acids. It's the only common one that's lipophilic, meaning it dissolves in oil, not water. Pores are filled with sebum. An oil-soluble acid can travel into the follicle and work on the buildup inside. It doesn't just sit on top of the skin. That's why salicylic acid is the acne-specific exfoliant. Glycolic acid and lactic acid are water-soluble alpha hydroxy acids. They work more on the surface, improving texture and tone. But they reach pore congestion less directly.
The Keratolytic Effect: Exfoliation, Pores & Dead Skin Cells (Corneocytes)
Salicylic acid works as a keratolytic. It loosens the bonds between dead skin cells, called corneocytes. That lets them shed more easily, instead of mixing with oil and bacteria. It also has mild anti-inflammatory properties. That's part of why it can calm an existing pimple slightly, though that's a secondary effect. None of this happens instantly. A single wash won't unclog a pore that took weeks to form. The effect is cumulative, so consistency matters more than intensity.

Over-the-counter cleansers typically formulate salicylic acid between 0.5% and 2%. Drugstore options like CeraVe and Neutrogena often use 2%, while gentler formulas from COSRX use 0.5%. Prestige options like La Roche-Posay, Paula's Choice, and Murad sit in a similar 0.5%-2% range. Higher isn't automatically better in a rinse-off product. A cleanser only contacts skin for a short window. The benefit of 2% over 1% is smaller than in a leave-on treatment. But the risk of dryness and irritation scales up faster. For most people, 2% is the practical ceiling for a face wash. Going stronger usually means switching to a leave-on serum or peel.
Salicylic Acid Cleansers vs. Leave-On Serums and Retinoids
It's worth being clear about what a cleanser can and can't do. A serum or toner stays on the skin, giving the acid more time to work. That's why many routines use a leave-on BHA alongside, not instead of, an exfoliating cleanser. Think of the cleanser as light daily maintenance. The leave-on product, or a retinoid, is the more targeted treatment. Using both is common, but pay attention to total exfoliation load. The two add up.
Who Should Be Cautious: Pregnant Readers & Aspirin Allergy
Salicylic acid is generally well tolerated, even by people who react poorly to other acids. But it isn't universally suitable. People with a genuine aspirin allergy should talk to a doctor first, since salicylic acid is chemically related to aspirin. Pregnant readers are often advised to avoid leave-on, high-concentration salicylic acid treatments. Low-concentration, rinse-off cleansers are generally considered lower risk. Combining Salicylic Acid With Benzoyl Peroxide on Sensitive Skin Without Irritation
Salicylic acid is often combined or alternated with other acne actives. Knowing how they interact helps avoid over-treating skin. Benzoyl peroxide works differently: it kills acne-causing bacteria instead of exfoliating. Pairing the two isn't inherently a problem. But using both on sensitive skin at the same time can cause more dryness than either alone. Retinoids increase skin's sensitivity and cell turnover. They just need attention to how skin actually responds.
