Bentonite vs kaolin: absorbency and oil control for sebum
Both are cosmetic clays used in masks for oily skin. But they come from different mineral sources and behave differently. Bentonite forms from weathered volcanic ash. It has a strong negative electrical charge and a high swelling capacity in water. That's why it feels thick and grips tightly as it dries. Kaolin is a naturally occurring, finer white clay. It has a much lower swelling capacity and a gentler electrical pull. The practical result: bentonite pulls more sebum and oil, more aggressively. Kaolin absorbs less, more gently.
Bentonite's higher absorbency pulls oil from congested pores more effectively. That's why it shows up in most "deep cleansing" or bulk clay products. Kaolin still absorbs sebum and helps mattify oily skin, just less dramatically. It tends to rinse off more smoothly, with less residual pulling. That's part of why it shows up so often in masks aimed at first-time users.
Minerals, patch test and skin tolerance
Bentonite carries a broader mix of trace minerals—calcium, magnesium, and iron among them. These can occasionally trigger more reactivity in compromised or very reactive skin barriers. Kaolin's mineral profile is simpler. It's generally the safer starting clay for oily, easily irritated, or sunburned skin. The same goes for skin dealing with active breakouts. Neither clay is inherently hypoallergenic. Either can sting on broken or compromised skin. A patch test on the inner arm, before a full-face application, is a reasonable precaution either way.
Sensitive skin, acne-prone and combination skin: which clay fits
Heavy, resilient oil production that's rarely irritated generally tolerates bentonite well. It gives a more visible mattifying and pore-clearing effect. Sensitive skin that's also oily does better starting with kaolin. So does skin that's new to clay masks—it's the lower-risk option. Combination skin is oily mainly through the T-zone. It often does best with bentonite on the T-zone and kaolin, or nothing, on drier cheeks. Acne-prone skin with active breakouts usually tolerates a kaolin-and-BHA blend better than straight bentonite. Pure bentonite can be too stripping around active blemishes.

Pore-prone areas that run consistently oily, usually the T-zone, respond well to bentonite's stronger pull. Blackheads and active breakouts respond better to a gentler approach. Straight bentonite can irritate skin that's already inflamed from breakouts. A kaolin-based formula, often paired with a mild BHA, tends to work better there. Match the clay to the specific problem area, not the whole face. That usually gives better results with less irritation.
Blended formulas: charcoal, salicylic acid and French green clay
Many mass-market clay masks don't use a single clay in isolation. They blend bentonite and kaolin, sometimes with French green clay or charcoal added. This balances absorbency against comfort. Some formulas add salicylic acid too. The Ordinary's Salicylic Acid 2% Masque pairs kaolin with a 2% BHA, for oily, blackhead-prone skin. Kiehl's Rare Earth mask takes the opposite approach, favoring comfort over maximum strength. A blended formula is a reasonable middle ground if you're unsure which clay suits your skin. It typically won't pull as hard as pure bentonite. But it still outperforms kaolin alone on oil control. Checking the ingredient list order is the easiest way to tell which clay dominates a blend. The bottom line: mattify sebum and oily skin without irritation
Neither clay is objectively "better." Bentonite is the stronger, more aggressive option. It works well on oily skin that can tolerate it. Kaolin is the gentler, more forgiving option. It still helps mattify oily skin without pushing it toward dryness or irritation. If you're not sure which category your skin falls into, start with kaolin. Move to bentonite only if results feel insufficient—that's the lower-risk order to test them in.
