Every skin tone needs sun protection. But the case for deeper skin tones gets buried under a persistent myth. The myth says melanin makes sunscreen optional. It doesn't. Melanin's protection is strongest against UVB rays. Those are the ones responsible for sunburn. It's considerably weaker against UVA rays. UVA rays penetrate further into skin. They're the primary driver of long-term photoaging and DNA damage. That's the kind of damage linked to skin cancer over decades of cumulative exposure.
Melanocytes, hyperpigmentation, melasma, and post-inflammatory marks
Skin cancer and photoaging still happen in deep skin tones. They just tend to present differently. That feeds the myth that they don't happen at all. Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher remains the standard recommendation across all skin tones.
